Critical Courses

Your critical courses are the specific core courses required for the Masters in Counselor Education program plus the courses required for your concentration — not including other electives. You are required to have 60 credit hours to earn your masters degree in counseling.

Counselor Education Core Courses

Each course is 3 credits for a total of 27 credit hours of core courses.

Mental Health Counseling Concentration Courses

Each course is 3 credits for a total of 9 credit hours for your concentration in Mental Health Counseling.

  • COUN 555 Advanced Counseling Techniques
  • COUN 519 Counseling in Community Mental Health Settings
  • PSYC 533 Advanced Psychopathology

Clinical Field Experience

A hallmark of our counselor education programs is the work students are required to have in real-world settings in order to gain the practical experience needed to be an effective counselor. Those courses are:

  • COUN 539 Practicum (3 credits)
  • COUN 540 Internship (6-9 credits)


You are required to have 15 credit hours of approved electives within the counselor education masters degree program, which can help you narrow your specialization or explore other areas in your field. All approved electives are 3 credit hours each. Choose your electives from the following:
