What do you love about UL Lafayette?
Without a doubt, among all of the universities I have visited, ULL has the cleanest and best kept campus. Kudos to the grounds keepers. I also love the laid back atmosphere.

Area of Scholarship or Expertise:
Career, School, Marriage and Family Counseling
Also interested in Multicultural and Counselor Education related issues

Courses routinely taught:
Career and Lifestyle Development, Principles and Administration of School Counseling, Multicultural Counseling, Educational Psychology

Current Project:
Examining the admissions activities and procedures used by counselor education programs to select appropriate applicants who will be successful.

What is your hometown and what is unique about it?

While there are a couple of towns that could take the credit, I choose good old Holden, Louisiana. Holden is a small, rural town where fame, fortune, and monetary success are not valued nearly so much as loyalty to family and friends.

What was your first job and what did you learn from it?
My first paid job was cutting deli meat and stocking shelves at a local grocery store. I learned that Deli meat slicing machines are sharp, and that the composition of a human finger (not unlike my own) is such that it reacts much the same way as a block of chopped ham when faced with a whirling blade of death and dismemberment.

Outside Interests:
Reading, writing, movies, music, sports, martial arts, online gaming

Work of art, literature, or music that you would recommend:
As a work or art/architecture, St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican is a sight to which words can do no justice. In literature, the works of JRR Tolkien are particular favorites, specifically The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Dune by Frank Herbert and the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett also have a place in the Greatest of the Greats category.

Person who influenced you the most:
I’ve been touched by many people over the years, personally and professionally, but I would have to say that my parents had the most influence.

Why you do what you do:
I love sharing and discussing ideas with people. I love learning about myself and helping others to do the same.

Person you would like to meet:
JRR Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Sigmund Freud, C.S. Lewis

What do you want to give your students?
A love of the pursuit of knowledge and learning and the courage to question and challenge conventional wisdom and the opinions of others.

Why you are at UL Lafayette:
Short answer: I met and married a lovely young Lafayette girl.

A favorite quote or anecdote:
“If you want to be somebody else, change your mind…” – Sister Hazel
