Critical Courses

Your critical courses are the specific core courses required for your masters in counselor education degree plus the courses required for the school counselor concentration — not including other electives. You are required to have 48 credit hours to earn your degree.

Counselor Education Courses

Each course is 3 credits for a total of 27 credit hours of core courses.

  • COUN 504 Theories and Techniques of Appraisal for Counselors
  • COUN 505 Helping Relationships

  • COUN 509 Group Processes
  • COUN 524 Counseling and Development Across the Lifespan

School Counseling Concentration Courses

Each course is 3 credits for a total of 9 credit hours for your concentration in School Counseling.

  • COUN 503 Principles and Administration of School Counseling Programs
  • COUN 514 Counseling Children and Adolescents
  • COUN 553 Advanced School Counseling

Clinical Field Experience

You are required to spend time working in real-world settings in order to gain the practical experience you need to be an effective school counselor. Those courses are:

  • COUN 539 Practicum (3 credits)
  • COUN 540 Internship (6-9 credits)

Electives

You are required to have one elective 3-credit-hour course. You must choose your elective course from the following:
